Creating a Learning Culture

In a few days, I will have the privilege of giving my grandson his first car. (Excuse me while I take a moment to feel old). It is not a new car, so it has a few needs for maintenance. I have put off a couple of service tasks for this moment. Small things like spark plugs, air filter, etc. I collected the parts and have them waiting in my garage for the day he arrives with his parents to pick up the car.

“Here’s the keys,”

“Thanks grandpa!” 

“Not so fast. Open the hood.”

Some will view my methods as tough but I have found them successful through the years. You see, if he is going to drive, he has a responsibility to learn how to maintain the vehicle. This quick lesson will keep him (and his future family) safe on the road. An hour of replacing a few basic parts can help him understand the value of the ‘gift’, and prepare him to take care of it. But, it does more than that. You see, the keys are not all he will receive that day. He will receive confidence in knowing he has knowledge of caring for his car. He will receive a measure of independence, knowing he does not have to rely on someone else. And he will receive value added to his life…because he has learned something.

I use this as an example of building a culture to learn. There is immense intangible value in communicating how important education and learning actually are for those around us. This includes grandchildren, children, co-workers, subordinates, team members, etc. In today’s world, we cannot grow enough to keep pace by just casually approaching education. Training and education are fundamental needs in our culture and society today. And it is essential that those of us who understand the value of knowledge don’t just teach, but also create an understanding of its value by building a culture to learn.

In today’s workforce, learners have an incredible advantage. Information and technology continue to press forward, and there is little chance of slowing down. If an individual understands that training and educational opportunities will help them be more successful, they will seek them out.

Today, inspire someone to be successful. Inspire them to be a lifelong learner.
